Research Study · 2026
Closing the loop between customer data and media spend.
Meridian Advisory is interviewing 30 senior marketing, media, and customer-data leaders at Fortune 2000 companies on a question most of them are quietly stuck on: with cookies gone and privacy rules tightening, can the customer data you already own actually shape what you pay for in paid media, and can you prove it moved the needle?

I. Context
Most brands are sitting on more customer data than ever and can use a fraction of it in media. The gap isn't collection. It's the loop.
Third-party cookies have faded, consent rules keep tightening, and the rented audiences that used to carry paid media are thinning out. Every brand has heard the mandate: build a first-party data strategy. Most have. Profiles sit in a CDP, a CRM, a loyalty platform, and a dozen channel tools that don't talk to each other.
Capturing the data turned out to be the easy half. The hard half is pushing what you know about your customers back into paid media and publisher environments without exposing PII, and then getting conversion, exposure, and retail transaction signals back into the customer graph so the next buy is smarter than the last. Clean rooms, retail media networks, and consent-governed activation are supposed to close that loop. Inside most organizations, the customer-data team and the media team are still two different buildings.
Almost nobody has a settled playbook. That's why this study exists: 30 structured interviews with the leaders making these calls right now, on what's actually working, what's still a black box, and what shifts are expected heading into 2027, synthesized into one published report. Not vendor theory. Peer reality.
II. The Conversation
Every participant answers the same questions, so the findings compare cleanly and you'll hear how your peers answered the same ones at the roundtable. Each interview is 30 minutes, in five parts.
How much harder targeting and measurement have actually become versus two or three years ago, in your own numbers: acquisition costs, match rates, the parts of attribution that have gone dark.
Where your customer data lives today, how much of it genuinely makes it into marketing, and what's sitting unused and why.
If you wanted to stop paying to reach people who already buy from you, or find more people like your best customers, could you do that today across channels? And if you did, could you prove the spend moved the needle? Clean-room experience, good or bad, lives here.
How connected those two worlds honestly are inside your organization, and what's standing in the way of fully connecting them: the technology, legal and privacy, the org chart, or something else.
How you think brands are personalizing and buying media differently a year from now, and where AI agents fit in, if at all.
III. What You Get
Thirty interviews synthesized into a single benchmark on first-party data activation, clean-room adoption, incrementality measurement, and what shifts are expected heading into 2027. Contributors receive it before anyone else, along with interim findings as the interviews progress.
A closed-door virtual executive roundtable, co-hosted by Adobe and WPP, where contributors review the findings live and compare notes on data foundations, privacy-safe activation, and closed-loop measurement. Invite-only, contributors only.
The private network where senior leaders see what their peers are actually doing: anonymized, structured, ahead of public release. Members receive findings from active Meridian studies, peer benchmarks on specific decisions, and access to the contributor network. Study contributors join as founding members, permanently.
IV. The Roundtable
The roundtable discussion is structured around the three capabilities that separate brands that have closed the loop from brands that have only collected the data.
Moving from disconnected channel silos to a single, real-time source of truth: aggregating online and offline signals into unified profiles on platforms like Adobe Experience Platform and Real-Time CDP, with consent governance, live segment updates, and orchestration across owned channels.
Connecting brand data to external media without exposing PII: neutral clean rooms such as InfoSum and LiveRamp for double-blind overlap analysis, precise suppression, and secure collaboration with retail media networks and premium publishers.
Getting conversion, exposure, and verified retail transaction signals back from clean rooms into the customer graph, so audience models improve, cross-channel frequency is optimized, and incrementality is proven rather than assumed.
V. Who Should Participate
If you've got a vantage point on how customer data gets turned into media decisions, or why it doesn't, your perspective is what we're after.
Leaders setting direction and budget for personalization and media.
Owners of paid media strategy, retail media, and agency relationships.
Heads of CDP, CRM, data science, measurement, and marketing analytics.
Digital, martech, and transformation leaders shaping the media supply chain.
VI. About the Research
Meridian Advisory exists because the most useful intelligence in enterprise marketing never makes it into public conversation. Conferences, analyst reports, and vendor whitepapers capture the polished version. What's actually being scoped, funded, deprioritized, and quietly killed inside Fortune 2000 marketing organizations rarely leaves the room.
Meridian runs structured peer-research conversations with senior leaders and turns them into published reports your peers will actually read, built around the questions executives are already asking each other privately. If you've ever wished someone would just tell you what 29 other CMOs are doing about a specific problem, that's what we do.

Adobe and WPP are the joint sponsors of this study and co-hosts of the roundtable. Adobe builds the customer data, content, and experience technology marketing teams use to reach and convert customers. WPP is the world's largest marketing and communications group, partnering with the majority of the world's leading brands. They've sponsored this research because the closed-loop question, whether first-party data can safely and measurably drive paid media, is the question their clients and customers are asking. They want a peer-sourced view of what's changing, not a vendor narrative.
This study follows the Forrester TEI / IDC InfoBrief model: sponsored by technology partners, conducted independently by Meridian Advisory. Adobe and WPP do not attend interviews, do not direct the findings, and do not receive raw participant data. They receive the same published report participants do.
VII. Common Questions
Yes. By default, your name and company appear alongside your quotes in the published report. You can opt for anonymous participation and be quoted as, for example, "VP of Media, Fortune 500 retailer" rather than by name. We confirm your preference before the interview, and you review any attributed quote before publication.
No. This is a structured research conversation run by Meridian. There's no demo and no sales call from Adobe or WPP tied to your participation. If, after the interview, you'd like an introduction to the sponsors, we can make one. It is entirely optional and has no bearing on your seat at the roundtable or your copy of the report.
30 minutes max, over video. Often times can be quicker. No commitment beyond that one conversation.
The roundtable runs as a small-group virtual session once interviews are complete; you'll receive the confirmed date directly. The report is published within 60 days of the final interview, and participants receive it first.
Adobe and WPP fund the study and co-host the roundtable. The research itself, the questions, the interviews, and the findings, is conducted independently by Meridian Advisory. The sponsors receive the same published report participants do.
Always welcome. Write to garyburns@themeridianadvisory.com and we'll reach out directly to coordinate your peers participation.
VIII. Privacy
Nothing you share is published, quoted, or attributed publicly without your explicit written approval before publication. You'll review any direct quote tied to your name or company before it appears anywhere. If you opt for anonymous participation, your name and company are removed from all materials and you appear only by role and industry descriptor.
IX. Schedule
30 minutes. No sales pitch. A structured conversation about whether your customer data can actually drive your media spend, and whether anyone can prove it.
